John Wayne's Story

Workplace 1955->1957 Twice at E.J. Shoe company while attempting to join USAF (Underweight), then 24 wks at TV school in Chicago, then IBM Electronics Apprenticeship 1957-1960 then several different occupations at IBM Endicott - 108 Card Mach Final Test, 1401 solid-state computer final Test, then 1962 to 1973 mostly Gardner-Denver Wire Wrap machine maintenance and repair - electronic/hydraulic/mechanical, etc. with many other automated system build/repair and about four years of that time as Instrumentation Specialist. Then, in 1973 I was "encouraged" by then manager Theron Banker to take a computer software test and school and basically get outta his hair! I passed with flying colors and transferred to IBM E. Fishkill to finish my career as Computer Analyst, having written software and tested it for machines and systems for the Factory Control and Monitoring System (FCMS) which "drove" the IBM EF site automated system for the mfg of the computer hardware of most IBM systems. During the last four years there I was in charge of the relocation of the Information Systems Minilabs THREE TIMES! That consis...Expand for more
ted of raised-floor labs of 10-20 mid and minicomputers, all their cables and associtate hardware with minimum downtime. I had to work with the room design folks, the contract builders/movers/etc. and assist fellow programmers from going MAD while move progressed. I also was saddled with the Spring and Fall plans for the purchases of the computers for the labs and for programmer's desks and try to stay in budget. THEN, when last move was done and my manager said I'd have to learn a new computer language and compete with all the younger folk for the very little pay-raise budget, I told him to stuff it and retired after 39 years and 2 months with IBM. I've spent since Jan. 1957 adding two additions and one huge garage onto the house ... some done by contractors and some by me - I do electrical and plumbing and interior carpentry - I HATE SHEET ROCKING!! If my darling wife Suzumi (Yep, Japanese) asks me to put on one more addition, I'll leave it to your imagination ... bye. PS: This year i reached my 50th anniversary in Boy Scouting ... 7 as Scout and over 43 as a leader and still going ... bye: {|8<)#
